AUGUST

Why a Reset Matters

Summers are full of late nights, social events, and fun. That’s important—it keeps us energized and connected. But by the time August rolls around, many of us start feeling the back-to-school stress creeping in. Schedules, assignments, and expectations can feel heavy, especially for Black youth who may carry extra pressures at home, in their communities, or at school.

That’s why a reset isn’t optional—it’s necessary. Taking time to pause and realign helps you walk into September prepared not just academically, but emotionally and physically too.

Mind: Sharpen Your Focus

Your mind is your most powerful tool, and resetting it now makes the transition into school smoother.

  • Set Small Goals: Instead of overwhelming yourself with a long list, focus on 2–3 key goals. For example: improving your grades in one subject, joining a school club, or balancing study with self-care.

  • Practice Mindfulness: Even five minutes of deep breathing or journaling each day can clear mental clutter. Try writing three things you’re grateful for each morning.

  • Create a Vision Board: Use photos, quotes, or drawings that reflect what you want this school year to look like. Place it somewhere visible—it’s a daily reminder of your “why.”

Body: Build Healthy Habits

Your body needs as much care as your books and tech. Getting back into rhythm early helps avoid the crash of late nights once school starts.

  • Reset Your Sleep: Start adjusting bedtime now. Aim for 8 hours so your energy is steady when classes begin.

  • Fuel Up: Swap heavy fast foods for more balanced meals. Even small changes—like fruit for snacks or water instead of soda—make a difference.

  • Stay Active: Movement reduces stress and boosts focus. Whether it’s dance, sports, or even daily walks, find what keeps your body moving and your energy high.

Spirit: Protect Your Peace

For many Black youth, school environments can sometimes feel isolating. Protecting your peace means surrounding yourself with affirmations, supportive people, and spaces that uplift you.

  • Check Your Circle: Spend time with people who motivate and encourage you, not those who drain your energy.

  • Speak Affirmations: Start your day with powerful reminders: “I am enough. I am capable. I belong here.”

  • Connect to Culture: Listen to music that inspires you, read about Black leaders who made history, or participate in cultural events. Connection to heritage strengthens resilience.

Practical Back-to-School Prep

Beyond the mental, physical, and spiritual reset, here are some simple ways to stay ahead:

  • Organize Your Supplies: Don’t wait until the last minute. Check your backpack, refill your stationery, and set up a clean study space.

  • Plan Your Routine: Write out a daily schedule—even if it changes later. Structure creates stability.

  • Use Local Supports: AIFY Success Coaches, mentors, and community programs exist for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out for academic, emotional, or career guidance.

Final Thoughts

Resetting isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being prepared. By taking time this August to care for your mind, body, and spirit, you set the stage for a school year filled with growth, resilience, and success.
