Why Creativity Matters for Black Youth
Art has always been more than just “art.” For Black youth, creativity is a lifeline. It’s the platform to speak truth, the tool to process struggle, and the pathway to connect with community. Whether through spoken word, fashion, music, or digital media, creativity allows young people to represent their full identities—often in spaces that try to box them in.
Take a scroll through TikTok, and you’ll see Alberta’s youth shaping narratives that reach thousands: skits about life as Black students in Canadian schools, dance challenges that bring joy to people around the world, and commentary videos that break down serious topics in ways only youth can. What’s powerful is not just the creativity itself but the confidence and courage it builds. A youth who sees their voice validated online or their painting featured in a community showcase begins to understand: I matter, my voice matters, my story matters.
Spotlight on Alberta’s Young Creators
Meet Aaliyah, a 17-year-old poet from Edmonton. Her spoken word pieces tackle themes of identity, resilience, and systemic inequality. One of her reels recently went viral, with thousands of likes and shares. “I started writing because I felt invisible,” she explains. “But poetry gave me a way to take up space. Now I write not just for me, but for everyone who feels like they don’t belong.”
Then there’s Malik, a 19-year-old illustrator in Calgary. His artwork blends Afrofuturist themes with local landscapes, reimagining Alberta’s skylines through the lens of Black imagination. His digital prints have been featured in community art fairs, and he dreams of publishing a graphic novel one day. “My art is about reminding us that we belong in the future,” he says. “We’re not just part of history—we’re part of what’s next.”
These stories are just the beginning. Across Alberta, young creatives are starting clothing brands, producing music, directing short films, and using platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and even AI art tools to push boundaries. Each creation is proof that when Black youth are given the space and support to thrive, the results inspire everyone.
How to Share Your Creativity
Not every creator starts with an audience or fancy equipment. Many of Alberta’s most inspiring young artists began with nothing more than a notebook, a phone camera, or a box of pencils. The important thing is to start.
Share Your Work Online: Use social media not just for scrolling but for showcasing. Post that drawing, upload that rap, share your spoken word performance. The more you put your work out there, the more people connect with it.
Collaborate with Others: Creativity grows in community. Find other youth creators—whether in school, youth groups, or online—and collaborate on projects. From group art shows to joint podcasts, collective voices are louder.
Look for Mentorship: Reach out to local organizations, including AIFY, that can connect you with mentors in the creative fields you’re passionate about. Learning from someone who’s been there can open doors you didn’t even know existed.
Apply for Opportunities: Keep an eye out for youth showcases, competitions, and grants that support creative projects. Alberta has programs designed to elevate young voices, and they’re waiting for your application.
Final Thoughts
Being a creator isn’t just about making something beautiful—it’s about making something meaningful. Every poem, painting, or beat is an act of courage. It’s a reminder that Black youth in Alberta are not only part of the cultural conversation but leaders in shaping it.
So, to every young creator reading this: keep going. Keep writing, keep painting, keep producing, keep creating. The world needs your story, your vision, and your art more than ever.
